What Is Plasma Activated Water?

During a lightning storm, static electricity rearranges nitrogen molecules in the air. That modified nitrogen is carried to the ground in the rain. It's a naturally occurring process that has been feeding crops for millions of years.

Plasma Strike replicates that process on your farm. Air and water are passed through a gliding plasma arc, causing nitrogen to attach to the water molecules. The result is a liquid containing nitrite (NO2) and nitrate (NO3).

Applied to the seed before planting, it goes on at germination — the most critical window in the plant's life. At roughly 9 litres a hectare this is not a nitrogen application and we don't claim it as one. Whatever is happening at the seed, it isn't a fertiliser effect.

The Plasma Strike machine produces this liquid in your own shed using 110v power, a water supply and grounding rods — at a cost of A$0.03 per litre.

 

What the Trial Actually Was

Precision Technology Institute, Illinois, 2024. Corn, hybrid GH 030U8, planted 30 April, 36,000 seeds per acre, 30-inch rows, following soybeans.

Plasma Strike was applied to the seed at 1 gallon per acre — about 9.4 L/ha — against a control of 80/20 talc and graphite, the standard seed lubricant.

Result: 5.1 bushels per acre more than the control. That is +320 kg/ha. At A$0.03 a litre, the treatment cost A$0.28/ha.

PTI's report names the product Green Lightning. That is the same product, marketed in Australia and New Zealand as Plasma Strike.

 

What It Doesn't Show

One site, one season, one hybrid. PTI's summary does not state replication. It is American corn at an American planting date, and the response on an Australian crop has not been measured.

The same 2024 PTI report tested the product two other ways. As an in-furrow nitrogen source it lost 1.3 to 10 bushels an acre depending on rate. As a full nitrogen replacement it lost 44.8 bushels an acre.

We publish that because you would find it yourself, and because it points at something worth understanding: at 9 litres a hectare this is not supplying nitrogen. The seed treatment result and the nitrogen replacement result are not the same claim, and we are only making the first one.
